A Caldwell Cassady & Curry trial team led by Brad Caldwell won a unanimous $445.5 million patent infringement verdict for Collison Communications Inc. against communications giants Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc.
An eight-member jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Marshall issued the decision Oct. 5, 2025. In addition to Mr. Caldwell, fellow firm principals Chris Stewart, Justin Nemunaitis, and Aisha Mahmood Haley presented key evidence. Firm principals John Summers and Seth Reich, and associates James Smith, James Yang, Alexander Gras, and Xu Zhou provided crucial support before the trial and throughout the courtroom proceedings, along with Andrea Fair from Longview’s Miller Fair Henry.
The jury of seven women and one man issued the Oct. 10 verdict against Samsung for willfully infringing a series of patents used in mobile devices that rely on Samsung’s 4G and 5G networks.
The case focused on patents covering methods for reducing signal interference in network communications. Defense contractor BAE Systems developed the technology to ensure clear communications on busy networks. Collision Communications acquired the patents from BAE nearly 15 years ago to commercialize the technology in the cellular industry.
Jurors heard evidence that Collision Communications and Samsung held extensive discussions from 2011 through 2014 about the possibility of forming a business partnership, including communications regarding the patent portfolio.
The case is Collison Communications Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc., No. 2:23-cv-00587.
